Trump Signs Bill For Women’s Suffrage Monument In Washington, D.C. – Forbes

17December 2020

President Donald Trump signed a bill Thursday authorizing an outdoor federal monument in Washington, D.C., to the women’s suffrage movement to honor the activists who won women the right to vote, his latest move to mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

Key Facts

The statue, titled Every Word We Utter, will be a 22-foot tall bronze sculpture featuring the images of activists Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth and others, Trump said.

Trump has long supported the legislation—in August, he encouraged Congress to pass the bill on Twitter, adding that he has “done more for WOMEN than just about any President in HISTORY!”

Colorado sculptor Jane DeDecker has been tapped for the project, and already created a model of what the statue could look like.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.), states that no federal funds will be used to pay for the monument, and a Colorado-based board will fundraise to cover the costs.

While early versions of the legislation called for the memorial to be erected near the U.S. Supreme Court, a location for Every Word We Utter has not been announced.

Crucial Quote

“For more than seven decades, courageous women hosted rallies, published newspapers and worked tirelessly to secure women’s [right] to vote,” Trump said. “The relentless effort prevailed and 100 years ago the United States ratified the 19th Amendment.”

Key Background

The year 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the constitutional right to vote. However, discrimination at polling sites still continued, especially against women of color. Earlier this year, Trump pardoned Anthony nearly 150 years after she was arrested in Rochester, New York, for voting. Every Word We Utter will join The Portrait Monument, a small statue located within the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, in honoring suffragists.
