Thousands Flock to Black Lives Matter Plaza to Celebrate Biden’s Win – NBC4 Washington

Cheers might be heard in Washington, D.C., after Joe Biden was predicted to have defeated President Donald Trump.

A sea of people put into Black Lives Matter Plaza just north of the White House. People popped bottles of champagne, banged on pots and pans, waved flags and cried out with joy.

Some chanted: “Na na na. Na na na. Hey hey hey. Bye-bye.” One man yelled, “He's gone!”

“We enjoy Kamala. I suggest, it's a proud minute to have an HBCU graduate representing this nation … and a female, and an African-American female,” a Howard University alumna said. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is a 1986 Howard graduate.

Some roads in the location around the White House are closed for the crowds. People of all ages and walks of life came out to demonstrate. Many were using face masks, News4's Mark Segraves reported.

“This is the day that the Lord has actually made,” an elated reverend in the crowd informed News4.

“Bye bye, Donald Trump,” a female repeated into a loudspeaker.

“It's great to see democracy's working.

I couldn't be better, “Georgetown University trainee Jack Mahoney said. Champagne sales were brisk at Rodmans grocery store on Wisconsin Avenue NW. A lady using a pink hat with the logo of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority– of which Harris is a part– smiled with a bottle of pink bubbly.

WRC-TV Minutes after Biden was projected to have actually won in Pennsylvania, an eruption of music and cheers might be heard from windows and terraces in the Tenleytown and Shaw areas.

In Cleveland Park, people cheered on street corners as passing cars and trucks beeped their horns.

On K Street NW, drivers stuck in traffic honked their horns once again and again. Nearby in Bethesda, people shouted and banged pots and pans. Cheers can be heard in Bethesda, Maryland in the moments after Joe Biden beat President Donald Trump according to NBC News forecasts. People cheered and hit pots and pans.

In Alexandria, whoops and shouts could be heard. One couple might be seen drinking directly from a champagne bottle, News4's Julie Carey reported.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser praised Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.” We might not be prouder to have President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris join our city. They will not only bring dignity back to the White House, but a genuine commitment to the shared worths we maintain and defend every day in our city– the worths embodied by Black Lives Matter Plaza leading right up to their front door,” Bowser said in a statement.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan stated on Twitter, “Congratulations to President-elect Biden. Everyone needs to want our president to succeed because we require our country to succeed. We have great challenges ahead of us as a nation. Now more than ever, we require to come together as Americans.”
